Carter Beats the Devil
September 5, 2001
Filled with historical references that evoke the excesses and enthusiasm of postwar, pre-Depression America, Carter Beats the Devil is the complex and illuminating story of one man's journey through a magical -- and sometimes dangerous -- world, where illusion is everything, and everything is illusory.

This well-researched historical fiction goes back to the days of Vaudeville when good magicians were the best entertainment anyone could ask for. Following the magician Carter the Great from childhood to late life, Carter Beats the Devil provides both a good story and a detailed setting. My favorite historical fiction without a doubt.
